This thesis constitutes a study of K. Theotokis's fiction, which can be viewed as a tum from symbolism to realism on the literary level, and from Nietzscheism to socialism and Marxism on the ideological level. The study argues that despite Theotokis's changes in ideological and artistic orientation there is a strong link between his literary and ideological bearings. In fact Theotokis's persistently ideological concerns went hand-in-hand with the unceasing interest in literary developments of his original artistic mind. The study is divided into two parts: The first part discusses Theotokis's symbolistaesthetic production. The first chapter focuses on symbolism and aestheticism in the European and modem Greek context. The following five chapters examine Theotokis's Antijengides, To Vio tis Kiras Kerkiras, Pathos, Kosmogonia, / Hasi tu Kosmu, Apellis in order to evaluate his position amidst other symbolist-aesthetic writers as well as the connection between his literary choices and the changes in his ideological viewpoint. The second part discusses Theotokis's realist-naturalist fiction. The seventh chapter focuses on realism and naturalism as well as on their relationship. It also locates the period of time in which Theotokis's literary and ideological change occured and proposes a distinction of his realist fiction into rural ethography and ideological novels. The remaining chapters explore the relationship between the ideological novels (/ Timi Ice to Hrima, Katadikos, / Zoi ke 0 Thanatos tu Karavela, / Sklavi sta Desma tus) and realist-naturalist poetics and investigate the connection between Theotokis's literary and ideological changes of orientation.
