Previous issue date: 2014-03-11 / The carbon capture and storage technologies are listed among the important strategies for reducing the CO2 emissions and mitigate climate change in a fossil fuel dependant world. Among CO2 capture techniques, chemical absorption process which uses aqueous amines solutions has been extensively studied and used in the industry for decades. However, this process has a number of drawbacks. In order to deal with the great number of drawbacks caused by amines, recently, mixtures of aqueous amine solutions and ILs (Ionic Liquids) have been appointed as potencial solvents for CO2 capture, because allow to combine the properties and benefits of ILs with gas absorption capacity of aqueous amine solutions. In this work, carbon steel corrosion behavior in mixtures of aqueous amines solutions (MEA or MDEA) and 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate [bmim] [BF4] in typical conditions of temperature and pressure of CO2 capture process (45 ?C and 27 bar) was investigated. The corrosion rate was determined by weight loss measurements. The chemical composition, morphology and characteristics of the corrosion product scales formed on the surface of steel were analyzed by using surface techniques (SEM and EDS). The properties of the corrosion product scales were also evaluated by potentiodynamic polarization technique. The CO2 absorption was measured at 45 ?C and pressures from 1 to 27 bar using a Magnetic Suspension Balance (MSB). The results showed that the addition of 10 % of [bmim] [BF4] in weight at the aqueous amine solutions can provide a feasible and efficiently opportunity for CO2 capture, because in MEA (M0), a considerably decrease of 72% on the corrosion rate was observed and the CO2 absorption values were close to the ones obtained for MDEA (MD0), whereas for MDEA (MD0), the addition of 10 % of [bmim] [BF4] did not change considerably the CO2 absorption and also the corrosion rate decreased (26%).
