A situação demográfica da sociedade atual revela que o aumento da expectativa de vida da população é crescente em todas as localidades mundial, com aumento mais expressivo no grupo de indivíduos com idade superior a 80 anos. O envelhecimento está associado à prevalência de doenças crônicas não transmissíveis (DCNT), mudanças na composição corporal e diminuição da capacidade funcional (CF). Objetivo. Sendo assim, o objetivo do presente estudo foi analisar a associação entre CF, composição corporal e condições de saúde de indivíduos com idade igual ou acima de 80 anos. Métodos. A amostra foi composta por 135 idosos, com 80 anos ou mais, residentes na área urbana de Presidente Prudente - SP. Foram feitas medidas antropométricas, avaliação da composição corporal pelo DEXA, análise sanguínea: colesterol total (CT) e frações (LDL e HDL), triglicérides (TG) e glicemia em jejum (GLI). A avaliação da CF foi realizada por meio dos testes de velocidade para caminhar, equilíbrio estático e força de membros inferiores presentes no questionário SABE. Os participantes também responderam ao questionário de morbidade referida resumido do Standard Health Questionnaire for Washington State (2005). As análises estatísticas foram realizadas pelo programa SPSS 17.0 e a significância estatística foi estabelecida em 5%. Resultados. Os homens com maior CF apresentaram maiores valores percentuais de massa magra (MM) (35,6%) comparados aos de menor capacidade (15,6%), p=0,026 e aqueles com maior capacidade apresentaram maiores valores de conteúdo mineral ósseo (CMO) de fêmur comparados aos de menor capacidade (p=0,001). As mulheres com maior capacidade apresentaram maiores valores de densidade mineral óssea (DMO) (30,8%) comparadas as de menor capacidade (20,5%) p=0,041. Os idosos... The demographic situation of society today reveals that the increased life expectancy of the population is increasing in all locations worldwide, with more significant increase in the group of individuals aged over 80 years. The aging is associated with prevalence of chronic noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), changes in body composition and functional impairment. Objective. Therefore, the objective of this study was to analyze the association between functional capacity, body composition and health status of individuals aged above 80 years. Methods. The sample was consisted of 135 elderly aged 80 or older living in urban Presidente Prudente - SP. Anthropometric measurements were made, assessment of body composition by DXA, blood analysis: total cholesterol (TC) and its fractions (HDL and LDL), triglycerides (TG) and fasting glucose (GLU). The functional capacity evaluation was performed by means of tests of walking speed, static balance and lower limb strength in the questionnaire SABE. Participants also answered the questionnaire morbidity summarized the Standard Health Questionnaire for Washington State (2005). Statistical analyzes were performed using SPSS 17.0 and statistical significance was set at 5%. Results. The men with higher FC showed higher percentage of lean mass (MM) (35.6%) compared to lower capacity (15.6%), p=0.026 and those with greater capacity showed higher bone mineral content (BMC) of femur compared to smaller capacity (p=0.001). The women with higher capacity showed higher bone mineral density (BMD) (30.8%) compared to the smaller capacity (20.5%) p=0.041.
