El concepto de identidad ha sido muy trabajado en la obra de Arendt, y hay
mucho sobre este que podemos decir con claridad. Por ejemplo, sabemos que
únicamente podemos comprender quién es alguien a través de sus acciones o
de las historias que dichas acciones tejen. También sabemos que no podemos
describir la identidad con palabras, ya que terminaríamos reduciendo quién
somos a qué somos. Sin embargo, no sabemos qué es, ya que Arendt no ofrece
una definición precisa de esta.
El objetivo general del presente trabajo es brindar una definición sobre qué es
aquello que Arendt llama identidad. Se inicia el trabajo reflexionando sobre el
mundo, sobre su importancia en la obra de Arendt, y señalando que la acción
solo puede ser comprendida unitariamente si es que se toma en cuenta su
relación con el mundo. Luego, tomando en cuenta las relaciones entre la
identidad y el mundo, y una serie de citas sobre la identidad presentes en la obra
de Arendt, se presentan criterios que una definición de la identidad ha de cumplir.
A partir de estos criterios, se concluye que la identidad es el espacio que
ocupamos en el mundo el cual es actualizado y es observable a través de la
acción. / The concept of identity has been worked on a lot in Arendt’s work, and there is
much we can say about it without ambiguity. For example, we know that we can
only understand who someone is through their actions or the stories those actions
narrate. We also know that we cannot describe identity with adjectives, as we
would end up reducing “who” we are to “what” we are. However, we do not know
what it is, since Arendt does not offer a precise definition of it.
The general objective of this work is to provide a definition of what Arendt calls
identity. The work begins by reflecting on the world, on its importance to Arendt’s
work, and pointing out that the concept of action can only be understood unitarily
if its relationship with the world is taken into account. Then, considering the
relationships between identity and the world, and a series of quotes about identity
present in Arendt’s work, we present criteria that a definition of identity must meet.
From these criteria, it is concluded that identity is the space we occupy in the
world, a space which is updated and made observable through action.
