A presente dissertação tem como objeto de estudo os caminhos do território do BaixoAve, isto é, o conjunto de infraestruturas que, da proto-história à atualidade, se foramintegrando naquele espaço regional. Por caminhos tomámos todas as nomenclaturas,tipologias e funções sob as quais estes elementos se foram desdobrando edesmultiplicando, num processo denso e muito complexo.O Baixo Ave, que aqui definimos pelos concelhos da Póvoa de Varzim, Vila do Conde,Vila Nova de Famalicão, Trofa e Santo Tirso, é o espaço ao qual cingimos o nossoestudo. Este território apresenta características muito próprias, como a sua posiçãointermédia entre os contextos regionais minhoto e duriense ou entre o interior dovale e as terras planas situadas sobre o Atlântico. Não obstante a identificação destecarácter individualizado, devemos também sublinhar os traços que aquele territóriocomunga com todo o Entre-Douro-e-Minho. Entre as suas planícies e os valesprofundos e retalhados provocados pelos seus afluentes, o território desenvolve-senuma sucessão de espaços contidos, por onde o povoamento se disseminou.É justamente com base neste povoamento disperso pelo território que entendemos serrelevante proceder a um recuo temporal que nos ajudasse a compreender o processode incorporação contínua dos caminhos na estrutura do espaço regional. Com base nanatureza antiga dos assentamentos do Baixo Ave, esta ação metodológica organizouse,criticamente, sob momentos-chave da infraestruturação do território, onde oscaminhos ocuparam lugar central: dos caminhos do pescado castrejos às viae publicae,vicinales e privatae da romanização; das vias medievais às vias transversais da IdadeModerna; das estradas reaes e distritaes, às estradas municipais ou à autoestrada.Num território há muito densamente povoado, o estudo dos caminhos e do seucontributo para a estrutura da paisagem é um ponto de partida para olharmoscriticamente para a evolução do território português. / This thesis has as main study object the ways of Baixo Ave's territory, that is, thewhole infrastructures that, from protohistory to present days, have become part ofthat regional area. By ways we considered all terminologies, typologies and functionsunder which these elements have been being unfolded in a dense and very complexprocess.The Baixo Ave region, which we defined here by the municipalities of Póvoa deVarzim, Vila do Conde, Vila Nova de Famalicão, Trofa and Santo Tirso, is the areathat our study focus about. This territory presents very own characteristics, such as itsmiddle position between the regional contexts of Minho and Douro or between theinteriors of the valley and the flat lands over the Atlantic. Despite the identification ofthis individual character, we should also emphasize the peculiarities that this territoryshares with all Entre-Douro-e-Minho region. Between its plains and the deep valleys,dug by its tributaries, this territory develops itself in a sequence of contained spacesby where the settlements spread.It's precisely basing on these settlements spread over the territory that we believeit's useful to make a step backwards that helped us understanding the process ofcontinuous incorporation of the ways in the regional space's structure. Basingon the ancient nature of the Baixo Ave's settlements, this methodological actionwas judiciously organized under several key-moments of the territorial infrastructurationwhere these ways have an essential role: from the proto-history waysto the viae publicae, vicinales and privatae of the Romanization; from the medievalways to the transversal ways of the Modern Age; from the royal and district roads tothe municipal roads or highways.In a territory since long time highly populated, the study of the ways and theircontribution to the landscape structure seams a departure point for us to lookthoughtfully towards the evolution of the Portuguese territory's construction.
