Revitalizace deponií na Holešovickém nábřeží / Revitalization of the reservoirs on the waterfront in Holešovice

The theme of this diploma thesis is dedicated to the concept generally known as brownfields, how we call the industrial buildings or entire production areas which for various reasons have ceased to serve its purpose and deteriorate. This phenomenon is increasinly urgent topic of discussions since the fast surface development of settlements results in the incorporation of buildings formerly located at the settlements edges to the inner parts of the settlements urbanism. These objects may be subject to decay as well as the development of the specific areas in which they are located. There are many places with this fate in Prague, however as the most interesting site I have chosen a waterfront in the city center which formerly served as a transshipment and a storage of building materials.
The aim of this thesis is to evaluate the potential of the selected site, creating a project proposal, that would be the benefit for city residents. The selected location is a released space in the heart of the city and thus provides a unique opportunity to dedicate this area to all citizens as a public space and not to succumb to private interests. The used methods for gaining the outcome of the thesis include reading the literature on given topic, writing of research and development of analytical data or site research. Thanks to these methods the first options for solutions can be defined in its primary forms for creating a project study. For these reasons the thesis is separated into the text and project part.
Design of the study is to revitalize the waterfront and restore it into a park which is used for both social life and recreation. Recreation is possible in its active as well as passive form on the multifunctional surface of the residential lawns of the river banks. In the urban planning of the city the contact with the river is a unique spatial experience which can´t be offered by a street or a square. Once we grasp the river area not only as the line ashore but also as the development across the board, the river area offers also other ways to develop the recreational function. The direct involvement of the water element, with the assistance of the architectural elements as sitting stairs, piers, pontoons or ships is maximally exploiting the potential of the site. Bank as a space that belongs to the river, which is flooded at regular intervals, is not possible to build up or land the bankside vegetation without previous thought. For this reason the proposal suggests only airy solution with minimalist vegetation across the direction of the water stream to serve as least as possible as the barrier during floods. Part of the study design itself is a functional and project proposal for the reconstruction of the crushing plant of the former dumping grounds, which must surely be maintained in their original form as the link to the former inhabitants and their heritage for present generations in the historical industrial district. For the building of the crushing plant I suggest a new way of functional use, which is friendly to this building of monument protection, preserving maximum of its appearance and at the same time can also provide a financial return. As the new service inside of this brownfield object I suggest climbing walls to be placed in the reinforced concreete tubes which connects the idea of preserving the industrial heritage with the idea to establish a new community site designated for recreation.
I see the contribution of this thesis in the fact that the idea of the classical urban park is developed in a way which uses all the facilities offered by the presence of water so that the unique character of this location is supported for common good. I believe I have chosen frugal and therefore stable form of usage for this brownfield object, that would have the capability of a long-term survival and for this purpose enrich not only the urban life, but provides the cashflow too.
