Hållbart byggande : Utmaningar och möjligheter / Sustainable Construction : Challenges and Opportunities

The purpose of this study is to investigate and clarify the concept of "sustainability" within the construction industry, with a particular focus on its significance and application in society. Through interviews with architects and a survey directed towards various individuals, the study aims to explore how information about sustainable construction is disseminated and to identify methods to increase public interest and engagement in this area. The study was conducted using semi-structured interviews, with the aim of examining different perspectives and gaining deeper insight into how the subject is understood as well as the barriers that exist in practice. A survey was also conducted to attain a more comprehensive understanding of the subject. The problem lies partly with the customers who focus on lower production costs and also their lack of knowledge about sustainability, sustainable construction, passive houses, and reuse of construction materials. The survey shows that many respondents wish for more accessible information on this subject. The problem  is also due to the lack of clear regulations set by the political sphere for the construction sector regarding the use of circular materials. This also applies to larger construction companies and housing associations. The results from the study indicate that there is a lack of experience and knowledge regarding the use of recycled materials and sustainable construction methods, among both architects and customers. It also emerged that there are economic and legal barriers, such as a lack of certification and regulation, which limit a more extensive use of recycled materials and sustainable construction techniques.
