Introdução: Na conclusão do Mestrado Integrado em Medicina escrevi sobre a Vida e Obra do Professor Abel Sampaio Tavares (1920-2013), figura incontornável no ensino da Anatomia na Faculdade Medicina do Porto (FMUP), cujo centenário do nascimento se celebra no corrente ano, o que constitui oportunidade de relembrar o seu legado.
Material e Métodos: Consultei documentação existente na Biblioteca da FMUP, na Biblioteca Municipal Porto e no acervo documental do Museu do Instituto de Anatomia. Reuni ainda informações de extraordinária relevância, facultadas pelo seu filho, Pedro Tavares, bem como por Amélia Rícon Ferraz.
Resultados: Em 1938 ingressou na FMUP, concluindo em 1943 a sua licenciatura com 18 valores. Iniciou a sua carreira docente, rapidamente se doutorando, em 17/11/1950, com 19 valores. Tornou-se regente de Anatomia Topográfica e Descritiva em 1961, ficando Catedrático a 22/12/1962. Abordou diversas áreas médicas, da Anatomia à Cirurgia Experimental e Geral, merecendo realce a particular atenção que dedicou aos problemas ligados aos sistemas vascular e nervoso vegetativo. O cooperativismo médico, a ética/bioética, a história da medicina, a terminologia anatómica, o periodismo de inspiração cristã mobilizaram também o seu empenho. Aposentou-se em 1981.
Discussão: Abel Tavares é uma referência da História da FMUP pela excelência profissional enquanto Professor Universitário, Médico e Humanista. Importa relembrar a sua vida e obra para exemplo das gerações vindouras.
Conclusão: Abel Tavares distinguiu-se dos demais pela sua generosidade enquanto Homem, Professor e Médico. Foi sem dúvida um marco na História da Medicina Portuguesa e na História da Anatomia Universal.
Palavras-chave: Abel Sampaio Tavares, Anatomia, Cirurgia, Ética, FMUP / Introduction: As a conclusion for the Master's Degree in Medicine, I have written about the Life and Work of Professor Abel Sampaio Tavares (1920-2013), an outstanding figure in Anatomy teaching in the Faculty of Medicine, Porto (FMUP), and whose centenary of birth is celebrated this year. It constitutes opportunity of remember his legacy.
Material and Methods: I have referred to the documentation in the FMUP Library, in the Porto City Library as well as in the archives of the Museum of "Instituto de Anatomia". I have also gathered extraordinarily relevant data provided by his son, Pedro Tavares and by Amélia Rícon Ferraz.
Results: In 1938 Abel Tavares entered FMUP. He graduated in 1943 obtaining a very good grade of 18. He started his teaching career and rapidly did his PHD in 17/11/1950, with an excellent grade of 19. He became a lecturer in Topographic and Descriptive Anatomy in 1961 and a professor on 22/12/1962. He approached several medical areas, from Anatomy to General and Experimental Surgery with special emphasis on the problems related to the vascular and vegetative nervous systems. Doctor's cooperatives, ethics/bioethics, the history of medicine, the anatomic terminology, christian inspired journalism also mobilised his dedication. He retired in 1981.
Discussion: Abel Tavares is undoubtedly a reference in the history of FMUP for his professional excellence as a professor, doctor and humanist. His life and work are worth being evoked as an example for future generations.
Conclusion: Abel Tavares stood out for his generosity as a man, professor and doctor. He was indisputedly a major milestone in the History of Portuguese Medicine and in the History of Universal Anatomy.
