The study presented here was performed to investigate hepatic diseases of dogs, emphasizing pathological findings related to infectious diseases. It was performed from January 2000 to December 2009, 4573 necropsies of dogs were made and 396 (8,66%) cases corresponded to hepatic diseases. Infectious or inflammatory hepatic diseases were diagnosed in 48,74% (193/396) of the cases. Canine leptospirosis was the main hepatic disease found, diagnosed in 150 dogs (37,88% of the liver diseases). 112 cases of leptospirosis were selected for evaluation of pathological findings. During the necropsies, jaundice (94,6%) and hemorrhages (86,1%) were commonly seen in several organs. Trough histology were identified dissociation of hepatocytes in the liver, tubular degeneration and necrosis (82.14%) and interstitial nephritis (54,46%) in the kidneys. In the lungs, congestion (78,57%), hemorrhage (67,86%) and edema (61,61%) were observed. Eleven puppies belonging to two different litters were analyzed through clinical signs, pathological findings and complementary diagnostic methods for confirmation of canine herpesvirus type 1 infection. Were identified cortical hemorrhages (9/11), characteristic of canine herpesvirus type 1 infection. Hepatomegaly (7/11), paleness of liver (6/11), firm lungs (11/11) and not collapsed (11/11), splenomegaly (9/11) and limphadenomegaly (8/11). Histological lesions were characterized by an hemorrhagic and necrotic presentation affecting the liver, kidneys, lungs and lymphoid organs. Specific diagnosis was obtained by direct immunoflorescence. Dogs with infectious canine hepatitis (ICH) were analyzed based on their clinical data, pathological findings and immunohistochemichal results. 23 ICH diagnoses were performed in the period of 1996 to 2009. The main necropsy findings were liver paleness (17/23), hepatomegaly (10/23), and hemorrhage in the majority of cases. Gallbladder edema (11/23), fibrinous material at the liver surface (8/23) and jaundice (6/23) were also observed. Histologically, severe necrosis of the liver (23/23) was found, related to identification of intranuclear inclusion bodies, a characteristic finding of ICH. Positive immunohistochemichal staining for canine adenovirus type 1 were seen in greater amount in liver (23/23), brain (22/22), cerebellum (16/20) and kidney (16/21).
