Preliminary studies on the physiology of a psychrophilic Chlamydomonas (Chlorophyceae)

An investigation of an obligate psychrophilic green alga, Chlamydomonas sp., was undertaken to define some of its growth characteristics. It has a temperature optimum of 5°C and a pH optimum of 6.5. A variety of organic supplements stimulate growth and both NO(3)¯ and NH(4)+ -N serve as nitrogen source. Under optimum conditions (5°C, pH 6.5, 0.1% glucose) a maximum of 1.37 doublings day (-1) was obtained. Photosynthesis and respiration have a temperature optimum of 10°C, reaching complete inhibition when the temperature is increased to 20°C. / Science, Faculty of / Botany, Department of / Graduate
