period of the military dictatorship in Brazil (1964-1984), sometimes supporting the coup,
sometimes taking part in the democratic resistance - especially after 1968 - with
international campaigns, official statements, articulation for the Committee for Justice
and Peace, claims from catholic pastoral groups, etc. The bishops, however, never built a
monolithic block. This study considers the heterogeneity of the Catholic clergy and
political specificities of each region during the military dictatorship in Brazil, suggesting
that for every bishop, added to each local context and to the practice concept of the
religious message, the weight of the union around his institution may be the explanatory
axis for his position in order to bring new perspectives for qualitative analysis of political
relations between the Catholic Church and the State in Brazil during the military
dictatorship. The specific aim of this research is to investigate the political activity of the
bishops of the Catholic Church in São Paulo state dioceses based in São Carlos and Assis.
The results of the study are expected to respond to literature gaps on the subject, which
until now have mainly focused in the progressive clergy, either in major population
centers or in a national level. / A literatura acadêmica frequentemente referencia a articulação da Igreja Católica, no
período do regime militar no Brasil (1964-1984), ora em seu apoio ao golpe, ora na
resistência democrática - sobretudo após 1968 - com campanhas internacionais, notas
públicas, articulação de Comissões de Justiça e Paz, denúncias pastorais, etc. Os bispos,
entretanto, nunca compuseram um bloco monolítico. O presente estudo considera a
heterogeneidade do clero católico e das particularidades políticas de cada região durante
a ditadura militar no Brasil, sugerindo que para cada bispo, o peso da unidade em torno
da sua instituição, somado a cada contexto local e à concepção de prática da mensagem
religiosa, pode ser o eixo explicativo para o seu posicionamento, de modo a trazer novas
perspectivas de análise qualitativa das relações políticas entre a Igreja Católica e o Estado
no Brasil durante o regime militar. O objetivo específico da pesquisa é investigar a
atividade política dos bispos da Igreja Católica nas dioceses do interior de São Paulo
sediadas nas cidades de São Carlos e Assis. Os resultados do trabalho pretendem
responder às lacunas da literatura sobre o tema, que até agora focou majoritariamente no
que foi considerado o progressismo do clero, nos grandes centros populacionais ou no
plano nacional
