According to the connectionism paradigm, this process occurs in parallel in the interaction between thought and language The textual data are associated with a large number of information traces for the construction of meaning on different levels, relating to prior experiences. This study aims at determining, in the light of the connectionism theory, the influence of prior domain knowledge on the reading comprehension of technical texts in English (English as a Foreign Language) of Brazilian technical high school students. The experimental group (GE) consisted of 39 participants taking the course of Chemistry and the control group (GC) was composed of 43 participants of the Electronics students group. We applied two tests. The first test (T1) was a fragment of a text on water treatment, which is entitled Oxygen Demand (Biochemical), the second test (T2) is the translation of (T1) in Portuguese. There was statistical corroboration of four specific hypotheses; but not the general hypothesis that addresses the influence of prior domain knowledge on the reading and comprehension of English technical texts. In this context, we believe that the results indicate partial statistical superiority of the experimental group over the control group. This is, therefore, the conclusion of this work limited to our research, our variables and the population involved in this research, without committing generalizations. / A construção de sentido é resultado de um processamento cognitivo de grande complexidade. Segundo o paradigma conexionista, esse processamento acontece em paralelo na interação entre pensamento e linguagem. Os dados textuais se associam a um grande número de traços de informações para a construção de sentido por vários níveis, ativando as experiências anteriores. Este estudo objetiva verificar, à luz da teoria conexionista, a influência do conhecimento prévio de conteúdo sobre a compreensão em leitura de texto técnico em língua inglesa (Inglês como língua estrangeira) de uma escola técnica brasileira de ensino médio. O grupo experimental (GE) foi constituído de 39 participantes que fazem o curso de Química e o grupo de controle (GC) foi constituído de 43 estudantes do grupo da Eletrônica. Foram aplicados dois testes. O primeiro teste (T1) foi um fragmento de um texto sobre tratamento de águas, cujo título é Oxygen Demand (Biochemical); o segundo (T2) é a tradução, em língua portuguesa, do T1. Os escores foram apresentados em valores brutos, percentuais e estatísticos. Houve corroboração estatística das quatro hipóteses específicas; mas não da hipótese geral que trata da influência do conhecimento prévio de conteúdo sobre a leitura e compreensão de textos técnicos em língua inglesa. Nesse contexto, acreditamos que os resultados indicam superioridade estatística parcial do grupo experimental sobre o grupo de controle. Fica, assim, a conclusão deste trabalho limitada a nossa investigação, as nossas variáveis e a população envolvida nesta pesquisa, sem cometermos generalizações.
