En étendant le réseau sur des acteurs souvent ignorés dans la recherche de l'histoire de l'art, l'auteur étudie le développement de l'architecture en béton armé en France entre 1889 et 1914. Il analyse les acteurs principaux qui, en moins d'un quart de siècle, forment cette nouvelle architecture qui révolutionne radicalement l'industrie du bâtiment et subséquemment toute l'architecture. Conçues par des entrepreneurs-inventeurs dans le contexte d'une architecture industrielle, les premières solutions architecturales en béton armé, s'orientent aux exigences de la fonctionnalité et de l'économie, tant sur le plan que sur la façade. L'emploi du béton armé dans l'architecture urbaine se limite par contre presque exclusivement aux ossatures dissimulées derrière des façades plus traditionnelles. L'auteur démontre que le développement du béton armé est spécifique du lieu et de l'époque et non pas seulement du matériau. / By expanding the network to actors often ignored in research in art history, the author studies the development of reinforced concrete architecture in France between 1889 and 1914. He analyzes the main actors who, within less than a quarter of a century, shape this new architecture and revolutionize radically the building industry and subsequently architecture as a whole. Developed by builder-inventors in the context of an industrial architecture, the first architectural solutions with reinforced concrete are determined by considerations of functionality and economy, as well on the floor plan as on the façade. On the other hand, the use of reinforced concrete in urban architecture is limited almost exclusively to skeletons, hidden behind more traditional façades. The author shows that the development of reinforced concrete is determined by the site and the time period and not only by the material itself.
