Previous issue date: 2011 / A água é imprescindível na vida das pessoas, não sendo distribuída uniformemente no Planeta. Usos da água como o lançamento de esgotos domésticos carreando fezes e outros poluentes, podem estar contribuindo para que as águas se tornem impróprias para consumo e prejudiciais aos ecossistemas e à saúde. A lei protege as águas e não autoriza a poluição, mas as comunidades ainda não estão efetivamente envolvidas na proteção dela. O mercado dispõe de tecnologias capazes de diminuir impactos do lançamento de esgotos domésticos. Resta ao cidadão querer não poluir as águas e atuar efetivamente na proteção delas, instalando simplificados sistemas de tratamento de esgotos em residências e em casas comerciais, somando forças com os governos que, em atenção ao ordenamento jurídico de proteção das águas, buscam conter a poluição hídrica. Para esta pesquisa foram selecionados documentos informativos, artigos científicos e normas jurídicas disponíveis em sites oficiais das Casas Legislativas federal e estadual (Minas Gerais), para subsidiar breve análise sobre o lançamento de esgotos domésticos nos corpos hídricos, analisando, também, as atribuições do Estado e da sociedade civil na proteção das águas, objetivando contribuir para a reflexão e para a conscientização das pessoas sobre o papel dos governos e do cidadão na proteção dos recursos hídricos. __________________________________________________________________________________________ / ABSTRACT: Water is indispensable to people’s lives and it is not evenly distributed on the Planet. Unreasonable use such as the release of domestic sewage containing excrement and other pollutants might be the reason to become water unsuitable for consumption and harmful to ecosystems. The law protects the water and does not authorize pollution, but communities are not still effectively involved in the protection of water resources. The market owns technologies to diminish impacts of domestic sewage release. It is up to citizens concern more upon water, not pollute and work on its protection, by installing simplified sewage treatment systems in residences and in commercial houses, joining efforts with governments that, aware of legal protection of water, search for measures to restrain water pollution. Informational papers have been selected for this research, scientific articles and legal rules available in the official websites of Federal and State (Minas Gerais) Legislative House, to subsidize brief analysis about the release of domestic sewage in water bodies, analyzing as well, the duties of State and Civil Society in the protection of water, aiming at contributing to the reflection and awareness of people about the role of governments and citizens concerned with the protection of water resources.
