Previous issue date: 2011-02-17 / Igreja Presbiteriana do Brasil / Presbyterian Protestantism reached the region of Torre de Pedra in 1880 through the Presbyterian Church of Guareí, organized by Pedro Antonio de Cerqueira Leite, one of the first four pastors graduated in Brazil. In this study, we tried to find the reasons for the internalization and expansion of Presbyterian Protestantism in the hinterland and rural areas, twenty-one years after the establishment of the missionary Protestantism in our country. The explanation for this fact was investigated in several contexts: religious, economic, social and anthropological. Such contexts led us to observe the action of the first itinerant native Presbyterian minister of Brazil, the former priest José Manoel da Conceição; the Tropeirismo responsible for the settlement and the emergence of the Presbyterian Church in this region of São Paulo State; the sparsely theological framework of the Catholic Church in this period and region; and the receptivity of the rural redneck man. The Presbyterian Church, having appeared in Guareí, motivated by religious intolerance migrated, as a whole, to one of its neighborhoods, Torre de Pedra. This intolerance, present in the neighboring towns as Guareí and Porangaba - was absent in Torre de Pedra, a fact that has characterized it as a place of refuge sought by believers from Guareí and nearby villages. The Presbyterian Church of Brazil (IPB) and the Independent Presbyterian Church - emerged in a rural context, became the founder nucleus of a village that, in a differentiated manner, has emerged around Protestant churches, and not around the Catholic church. Protestantism in Torre de Pedra, emerged in a differentiated way and its unique presence, has observed and observable influences in its history. This study aimed to investigate those influences by movements of accommodation and distance when dealing with the natural and the supernatural, rites, habits, customs and culture. / O Protestantismo presbiteriano alcançou a região de Torre de Pedra no ano de 1880 através da Igreja Presbiteriana de Guareí, organizada por Antonio Pedro de Cerqueira Leite, um dos quatro primeiros pastores formados no Brasil. Neste estudo, procurou-se encontrar as razões da interiorização e expansão do protestantismo presbiteriano nos meios rurais, vinte e um anos após ter-se instaurado o protestantismo de missão em nosso país. A explicação para esse fato foi pesquisada em diversos contextos: religioso, econômico, social e antropológico. Tais contextos nos levaram a observar a ação itinerante do primeiro pastor presbiteriano brasileiro, o ex-padre José Manoel da Conceição; o tropeirismo, responsável pelo povoamento e surgimento da Igreja presbiteriana nessa região do interior do Estado de São Paulo; a estrutura teológica rarefeita da Igreja católica nesse período e região; e a receptividade do homem rural caipira. A Igreja Presbiteriana, tendo surgido em Guareí, motivada pela intolerância religiosa, migrou em sua totalidade para um de seus bairros, Torre de Pedra. Essa intolerância, presente nas cidades limítrofes de Torre de Pedra Guareí e Porangaba não se fez presente em Torre de Pedra, fato que o caracterizou como um lugar de refúgio, buscado pelos crentes oriundos de Guareí e por outros de localidades próximas. As Igrejas Presbiteriana do Brasil e Presbiteriana Independente surgidas num contexto rural, se tornaram núcleo formador de um povoado, que, de forma diferenciada, surgiu ao redor das igrejas protestantes, e não da igreja católica. O protestantismo em Torre de Pedra, surgido de forma diferenciada e sendo presença singular, exerceu influências, observadas e observáveis em sua história. A presente pesquisa procurou investigar essa influência através de movimentos de acomodação e distanciamento no trato com o natural e com o sobrenatural, nos ritos, nos hábitos, nos costumes e na cultural.
