Previous issue date: 2016-09-20 / The goal of this research was to identify what seven students (four boys and three girls, aged 13 to 18) thought about the value of "justice." They all lived in a suburb of the southern area of São Paulo and were seeking to improve their basic education at an informal educational instituition, in order to be able to get into the labor market. The study was justified on the ground that, in Brazilian society, ethics has been tested, situation that requires a better understanding about moral development. The investigation, which followed the proposals of Piaget and Kohlberg, was qualitative. In data collection, the following instruments were employed: a brief text individually written on justice and participation in a focus group, which presented critical episodes containing situations of justice and injustice for reflection and discussion. The procedures for analyzing the data involved the construction of a posteriori categories, elaborated after reading all the material. The results showed strong disbelief in justice at home and at school, as well as outrage at the racial and socioeconomic discrimination present in both of them. In contrast, young people expressed the desire of learning about values in school. In their speeches, the presence of heteronomous moral was predominant, as well as an optimistic outlook on the role of school. Accordingly, it seemed urgent and necessary to change the treatment that is given to ethics, since it demands urgent and important changes / O objetivo desta pesquisa foi identificar o que sete estudantes (quatro meninos e três meninas com idade entre 13 e 18 anos) pensavam a respeito do valor “justiça”. Todos os participantes viviam em um bairro periférico da zona sul de São Paulo e estavam buscando aprimorar sua educação básica em uma instituição educativa não formal, para ingressar no mercado de trabalho. Justificou-se o estudo em razão de que, na sociedade brasileira, a ética vem sendo colocada à prova, tornando necessário compreender o desenvolvimento moral. A pesquisa, que teve como referencial teórico as propostas de Piaget e Kohlberg, foi de natureza qualitativa. Empregaram-se, na coleta de dados, os seguintes instrumentos: um breve texto escrito individualmente sobre justiça e a participação em um grupo focal, no qual eram apresentados episódios críticos contendo situações de justiça de injustiça. O procedimento de análise e discussão dos dados envolveu a construção de categorias a posteriori. Os resultados evidenciaram forte descrença quanto à justiça no país e na escola, bem como indignação quanto à discriminação racial e socioeconômica nelas presente. Em contrapartida, foi também encontrado, em suas falas, o desejo de que a escola ensine valores aos seus alunos, a preponderância da moral heterônoma e uma perspectiva otimista quanto ao papel da escola. Nesse sentido, recomendou-se atentar para o tratamento que nela se dá à ética, pois ele requer mudanças urgentes e necessárias
