Nyhetens plats i klassrummet : En studie över sex samhällskunskapslärares användning av nyheter i undervisningen på gymnasiet

News as didactic tool within the school subject of civics has come under scrutiny in recent years within the field of education. This study is to be regarded as a further development to that field of research. The aim of the study is not only to examine in what ways news are used by civics (samhällskunskap) teachers but also to connect these approaches to aspects of democracy and citizenship education.   The study applies a teacher-thinking perspective that puts the teachers’ pedagogical content knowledge in center of the research. It uses a qualitative method, interviewing six civics teachers in upper secondary school (gymnasieskolan) about their use of news as an educational tool and the didactic reasoning behind their chosen approaches.    The findings suggest that news is used both as separate to the courses’ core contents and integrated with some of its components, as defined in the curriculum. The identified approaches carry significant potential in providing students with qualities connected to citizenship education, however, the results are not clear as to what kind of citizen a news-based approach favors. Further research is needed to provide substantial evidence to the moral and practical underpinnings of a news-based civics education.
