For every child, growing up and living in a family with serious and far-reaching conflicts between family members is a serious risk factor for the child to develop a psychosocial complex of problems. In these cases, to help these families, a common use of input is family therapy. In this study, I have tried to provide a more advanced knowledge in the family therapist's daily work with families who have dysfunctional relationships and approaches within their family. I have tried to demonstrate if and how family therapists are experiencing challenges and difficulties, and how the family therapists are working to consider and encourage the principles of the best interest of the children, in their work with families who have dysfunctional relationships and approaches within their family. For this study, four family therapists have been interviewed about their experiences of working with families who have these complex of problems. The results show that the family therapists experienced different kinds of challenges and difficulties. The challenges and difficulties were connected to the individuals in the families, there could be emotional challenges for the family therapists and challenges that were connected to organizational factors. However, all challenges and difficulties that emerged, affected how the family therapists work, and in that way all the individuals in the families in one way or another. The results also show that the family therapists are actively working to take into account and encourage the principles of the best interest of the children by trying to implement a child perspective in all of their work where children are involved, and to make the child an active participant in the treatment process.
