TOWARD A NATIONAL PROGRAM OF NONFORMAL POPULATION EDUCATION IN SRI LANKA

Rapid and continued population growth is a worldwide problem. Sri Lanka too feels it severely. A growing portion of the national budget goes for welfare services, thus minimizing investment in development projects. / The purpose of this study was to develop a plan for a national program of population education in the nonformal system in Sri Lanka, on the assumptions that (a) the systematic diffusion of knowledge is an effective approach to reading adults and (b) the already established nonformal education system is the most appropriate learning environment for a population education program. / The method employed was that of documentary analysis. The sections analyzed included (a) current international assistance, (b) present status of population education in Sri Lanka, (c) population education programs in other countries including the Republic of China, India, and the Philippines and (d) program development in adult education. Based on the findings, a model for a national program was developed. As this plan was confined to a theoretical framework, a recommendation was made for implementation of the program with the contention that this would improve the situation by diminishing the rate of population growth. / Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 42-08, Section: A, page: 3401. / Thesis (Ph.D.)--The Florida State University, 1981.
