The blood proteins of five species of Oncorhynchus: chum, coho, pink, sockeye and spring salmon, have been separated by starch-gel electrophoresis. Comparisons the protein fractions obtained from representatives of fresh water downstream migrants, maturing upstream migrants and mature adults, have yielded indications of intraspecific differences associated with physiological states. Interspecific comparisons of the protein fractions obtained from salmon in comparable physiological states have yielded further indications of blood protein differences associated with species differences. A taxonomic grouping of the five species has been suggested based on the constant characteristics of their respective protein patterns.
