___________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / The objective of this study was to retrieve and discuss the structuring of beach volleyball as a high performance sports production in Brazil. After inserting the sport in modern times, the study began by collecting data on beach volleyball from the time it was still considered na amateur sport. From then, aim was placed on retrieving facts that were fundamental so that the sport could shift from being an amateur activity to a professional one. Finally, data pertaining to the current reality of the sport was also retrieved. Various documents, Internet sites, interviews and news clips were reviewed in order to analyze the feasibility of making of beach volleyball a sports modality that is representative of the `professional culture’ within the new paradigms of modern sport and also to state whether or not the process has lead to the insertion of the sport in the fore-mentioned model. Special focus was placed on the time period between and including 1986 and 2004 as it was in 1986 that the Brazilian Volleyball Confederation (Confederação Brasileira de Voleibol – CBV) began to manage the sport at the national scope and to monopolize it. Thus, under its management, it is important to mention the process for the managerial consolidation of the CBV by means of the creation of a beach volleyball department and of a normative manual for the practice of the sport in Brazil. From that moment on, it was important to verify how CBV’s performance was incisive in forming and organizing the World Circuit – the sport’s largest international competition. The 1991 creation of the National Circuit, which was made possible by the sponsor agreement signed between the Confederation and Banco do Brasil, also constituted a fundamental analysis of the sport’s ample spectacle-like and commercial dissemination. Another fact that aided in the understanding of the process was the possibility of acknowledging Brazil’s dedication toward making of beach volleyball an Olympic sport. Such fact took place in 1993 and strengthened the country’s decision-making power among worldwide decisions concerning the modality. During the data collection process, aim was made to ascertain the forms and values that are predominant in the social environment of beach volleyball. For this, focus was placed on the relationships that developed during the structuring process and attempt was made to verify how such relationships were influenced by the capitalist-structural changes and the new settings that resulted therefrom. The study concluded that despite having problems that are inherent to the sport’s being highly performance-oriented, and in light of many adversities faced in the national scenario, Brazilian beach volleyball is based on the values dictated by professionalism that overcome values of the amateur-like and traditional culture that are predominant in the universe of national sports.
