La industria farmacéutica presenta numerosas particularidades: alta intensividad en investigación y desarrollo, procesos de investigación largos y costosos, alta protección intelectual, problemas de agencia, asimetrías de información y por esto una serie de implicancias en la salud de la población. Todas estas en conjunto configuran la estructura de la industria, y la manera en que debe ser regulada es fuente de intenso debate puesto que se deben cumplir varios objetivos al mismo tiempo que presentan trade-offs y ante los cuales se debe buscar una situación de equilibrio. Se analiza el contexto actual de la actividad farmacéutica, la forma en que se regula en el mundo en sus diversos aspectos y sus consecuencias para el desarrollo de la industria en Chile / The pharmaceutical industry features several particularities: high R&D intensity, long and costly processes of research, high legal intellectual property protection, agency problems, information asymmetries and a series of implications for the population’s health standards. All af these comprise and set the structure of the industry, and the way in which should be regulated is object of intense debate because health policy must accomplish several aims that are full of trade-offs and to which a balance must be found. The current context of the industry is analyzed, as well as its regulation and their consequences for the development of the Chilean industry
