Previous issue date: 1991 / Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho consistiu em observar como ocorre o preenchimento do objeto direto nulo no PB(Português do Brasil), uma vez que já são notórios seu largo uso na fala e sua escassez na escrita culta brasileira. Para descrever essa evolução, foram analisados diversos fatores de ordem gramatical, tipo de objeto direto (contrapondo o objeto nulo ao preenchido), lugar do antecedente, tipo de oração que contém o objeto, contexto posterior, o acúmulo ou não de funções pelo objeto direto, marcas de concordância na oração que
contém o objeto. Isso porque acreditamos que o preenchimento/não preenchimento do objeto esteja associado a vários fatores conjugados numa situação particular. A metodologia utilizada foi a variacionista, embora os fatores
em estudo sejam mais de ordem gramatical e o quadro teórico que define o objeto nulo seja de cunho gerativista. Pressupõe-se, segundo Tarallo e Kato (1989),a possibilidade de se estudar a variação intralingüística através de princípios e categorias gramaticais gerativistas, postulados para dar conta da variação interlingüística / Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to observe how the filling of the empty direct object position takes place in Brazilian Portuguese, in face of the absence of overt direct object in speech and its presence in educated adult wríting. To describe this process, some factors of grammatical order were raised: types of direct object (including the null and all of the occurring overt ones in the data-base), the position of the null object antecedent, the type of sentence containing this object, its subsequent context, the co-occurence of other syntact function in
the direct object position, marks of agreement in sentence containing this object. These factors were raised under the belief that null objects co-occur with some associated factors in a particular context. The approach favoured ín the selection of the potential factors intervening with the object of this study is based on a combination of the variacionist methodology and the generative grammar framework . I suppose, according to Tarallo and Kato (1989), the possibility of analysing variable intralinguistic data through generative principles and categories, all of them postulated to explain interlinguistic variation / Mestrado / Mestre em Linguística
