In this thesis, I read Robert Musil’s novel Der Mann ohne Eigenschaften (1930-33) against the backdrop of fin de siècle anxieties centering on gender, sexuality, and the dissolution of the subject. I emphasize the philosophical import of sense perception within the incestuous relationship between the two siblings Ulrich and Agathe, and show how a subjectivity without essence or center emerges from their intimate interactions with each other.
