This thesis describes the design, construction and operation of an apparatus for experimentation with small, cylindrical samples under conditions of high temperature and pressure in the presence of fluids. It is also possible to deform the sample while subjected to these "hydrothermal" conditions by developing a differential which can produce either shearing or tensional phenomena.
