Some aspects of stress-strain theories and their use in the interpretation of the fracture pattern in rocks.

Stress-strain concepts and terminology are discussed, and definitions of basic terms given. The concepts of failure in the fields of Engineering, Soil Mechanics, and Geology are reviewed from a geological viewpoint. The conditions of rupture are discussed. Becker's (1893) paper is critically analyzed in the Appendix, and his principal conclusions are shown to be fallacious. [...]
