Aging, advanced cancer and cancer cachexia are distinct entities that share common signs and symptoms. With the increase in cancer patient survivorship, especially in the cohort of patients 65 years of age and over, there is a need to distinguish the commonalities and differences in markers of inflammation, body composition, functional performance, and the metabolic and nutritional profiles that characterize aging, advanced cancer and cancer cachexia. In characterizing elderly patients with advanced cancer, this thesis focuses on two areas: 1) validating the assessment tools that measure both body composition and physical strength, and 2) applying these tools to determine which of the above characteristics could be ascribed to physical aging, advanced cancer and/or cancer cachexia. A better understanding of these conditions can lead to more personalized cancer care and targeted treatment plans for improving quality of life in elderly cancer patients. / Le vieillissement, le cancer avancé et la cachexie d'origine cancéreuse sont des états qui partagent des symptômes communs. Puisque les personnes atteintes du cancer vivent plus longtemps, particulièrement celles âgées de 65 ans et plus, il est important de distinguer les différences visibles au niveau des marqueurs d'inflammation, de la composition corporelle, de la performance fonctionnelle et des profils métaboliques et nutritionnels qui caractérisent les trois états ci-haut mentionnés. En caractérisant les patients âgés atteints d'un cancer avancé, cette thèse se concentre sur deux sujets: 1) la validation des instruments de mesure de la composition corporelle et de la force musculaire; 2) l'application de ces instruments pour déterminer si les caractéristiques précédentes sont attribuées au vieillissement, au cancer avancé ou à la cachexie. Une meilleure connaissance de ces conditions peut amener à des soins personnalisés visant à améliorer la qualité de vie des patients âgés atteints du cancer.
