O Rio Araranguá, em Santa Catarina, enquanto atribuidor de diferentes sentidos e significados, ao efluir para a formação de práticas e costumes, acaba por mediar um particular modo de interação entre ser humano e natureza. Nesse sentido, objetiva-se analisar as especificidades ambientais, sociais e culturais estabelecidas entre as populações ribeirinhas e o Rio Araranguá através de sua dimensão fantástica, em que, concomitantemente aos relatos de estranhas aparições envolvendo caracaxás, bruxas, pessoas que desapareciam ao pedir travessia pelo rio, caminhões de fogo que perseguiam os pescadores e moradores em geral, dentre muitos outros casos, a fartura e abundância de peixes se entrelaça a essa visão mística de mundo. No entanto, à medida que se intensifica a produção carbonífera na região Sul Catarinense na década de 1940, somada a um peculiar ímpeto progressista, seus efeitos nocivos passam a afetar o fluxo de manutenção ecológica do Rio Araranguá, e a dimensão fantástica de natureza ligada à diversidade e à fartura dá lugar a uma perspectiva econômica e desenvolvimentista de uso dos recursos naturais.<br> / Abstract: Stage of mysterious events, where daily activities assume unexplainable dimension bordering the unreal. The Araranguá River in Santa Catarina, as the holder of different senses and meanings, flows towards the formation of practices and customs and ends up mediating, in a particular way, the interaction between human beings and nature. In that sense, the objective here is to analyze the environmental, social and cultural specificities established between the riverside population and the Araranguá River itself, through its fantastic dimension, that in conjunction with the reports of strange sightings involving mythological beings like the caracaxás, witches, people who suddenly vanished after asking to cross the river, trucks of fire chasing fishermen and residents in general, among many other cases, the abundance and affluence of fish interlace with this mystical view of the world. However, as the coal production intensifies in the southern Santa Catarina region in the 1940s, in addition to the peculiar progress-driven impetus, its harmful effects begin to affect the ecological maintenance of the Araranguá River, and the fantastic dimension of nature linked to diversity and abundance gives place to an economic and developmental perspective of use of natural resources.
