Jaragua is a district of great social, economic and cultural to the city of Maceio, since it is here that are located many of the most beautiful and ancient buildings of the city. Where you began its Maceio village, and so the first capital of Alagoas, from development and trade provided by port activities in the neighborhood. Given the importance of this neighborhood for Alagoas capital, the intent of this paper mainly lies in identifying the importance of the relationship between people's memories and their connection with the dynamics of places, especially those representing the early history of a city and serve as a historical and cultural reference, as is the Jaragua neighborhood. It is believed that the memory of the elderly, former residents of Jaragua, or those who had a relationship with the neighborhood, probably have much to contribute on the aspects responsible for the historical and social changes that the neighborhood has suffered over the past decades, who separate their days of peak-day, when the neighborhood is seen in an abandonment of looking and forgetting the rest of the population of Maceió. The document outlines a brief historical perspective of Jaragua, and makes a cut on the spot and more relevant to this work, considering the most cited local and frequented by respondents. It was used as a methodology to assist the search of the research objectives oral history, a method that seeks to understand the story through the memories of people who experienced a place or a time, but also the use of old and new pictures of Jaragua, where elderly might make a comparison with the aid of these images, on which spatial changes occurred in the area, through their memories, and if they are related to the current situation of the neighborhood. It was from this oral construction, from the perspective of older people, which we sought to understand the reasons that have left the neighborhood in a state of neglect and decay, where today he is, and that it was possible to understand the importance of rescuing the historical value and cultural of the city of Maceio neighborhood, still exploring memory and history of the area as active tools for preservation and probably the viability of their rehabilitation. / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / Jaraguá é um bairro de grande importância social, econômica e cultural para a cidade de Maceió, uma vez que é neste local que estão localizadas tantas das mais belas e antigas edificações da cidade. Local onde se deu o início da vila de Maceió, e assim a primeira capital de Alagoas, a partir do desenvolvimento e comércio proporcionados pelas atividades portuárias do bairro. Tendo em vista a importância desse bairro para a capital Alagoana, a intenção deste trabalho encontra-se principalmente em identificar a importância da relação entre as memórias das pessoas e sua ligação com a dinâmica dos lugares, sobretudo aqueles que representam o início da história de uma cidade e servem de referência histórica e cultural, como é o bairro de Jaraguá. Acredita-se que a memória dos idosos, antigos residentes de Jaraguá, ou daqueles que tiveram uma relação com o bairro, provavelmente têm muito a contribuir sobre os aspectos responsáveis pelas modificações históricas e sociais que o bairro vem sofrendo ao longo das últimas décadas, as quais separam os seus dias de auge dos dias de hoje, quando o bairro é visto sob um olhar de abandono e esquecimento pelo restante da população de Maceió. O documento esboça uma breve perspectiva histórica de Jaraguá, e faz um recorte sobre os lugares e aspectos mais relevantes para este trabalho, considerando os locais mais citados e frequentados pelos entrevistados. Utilizou-se como metodologia para auxiliar a busca dos objetivos da pesquisa a história oral, método que busca entender a história através das memórias de pessoas que vivenciaram um lugar ou uma época, como também o uso de imagens antigas e atuais de Jaraguá, onde os idosos puderam fazer um comparativo, com o auxílio dessas imagens, sobre quais mudanças espaciais aconteceram na área, através de suas lembranças, e se elas têm relação com a situação atual do bairro. Foi a partir dessa construção oral, sob a ótica dos idosos, que buscou-se entender os motivos que deixaram o bairro num estado de abandono e deterioração, em que hoje ele se encontra, e que foi possível compreender a importância em resgatar o valor histórico e cultural desse bairro da cidade de Maceió, explorando ainda a memória e a história da área como ferramentas atuantes para sua preservação e possivelmente na viabilização de suaressocialização.
