This study delves into the portrayal and utilization of historical usage within Swedish history textbooks, examining their treatment of historical usage. It scrutinizes how these textbooks present historical methods and the application of history in various contexts. The research highlights disparities in the textbooks' approaches to historical usage, particularly focusing on the depth of explanation and integration within the narrative. Through a comparative analysis, it becomes evident that while some textbooks offer thorough insights into the dimensions of historical usage, others merely provide examples without substantial elucidation. Moreover, the study reveals a predominant focus on 19th and 20th century history, possibly influenced by authors' perceptions of student interest and prior knowledge. Drawing from educational theories and scholarly literature, this research underscores the significance of adequately addressing historical usage in textbooks to foster students' critical thinking and understanding. It emphasizes the need for clear explanations of historical concepts and the integration of historical usage within the chronological narrative. The thesis theory is based on Åström Elmersjös framework of categorizing teachers perspectives and their teaching of historical usage. The theory is then applied on history textbooks. Additionally, the study explores the potential of utilizing typologies, such as Karlsson's framework, to categorize historical usage and enhance students' comprehension. While some textbooks attempt to integrate such typologies, there is a call for clearer explanations and integration to facilitate students' engagement and analysis. In conclusion, this research advocates for a more nuanced and integrated approach to historical usage in Swedish history textbooks, aiming to empower students with a deeper understanding of historicalusage and its implications.
