analyzed the narratives prepared by magazines Veja and Isto É
referring to the construction of meanings attributed to the
words democracy and citizenship over the period of political
opening and operation of the National Constituent Assembly.
The research involved editions of their magazines between the
years 1974 to 1988 when it started clipping the inauguration of
President Ernesto Geisel, who proposed the beginning of
political détente since guided by the authoritarian government,
and finished with the promulgation of the new Constitution
dubbed Citizen Constitution. The press was understood as a
space for placement of debates about the democratic model that
was expected to build the political opening acting as a place
sort of weather and pace of the political process and interfering
with the construction of a shared memory by different actors
and social groups on democratization . We tried to focus on the
resumption of demonstrations of different sectors of civil
society articulating new spaces of social and political activity
while the press strong in their narratives the importance of its
mediating role and oversight . Analyzed yet, the operation of
removal of the press and civil society on the participation and

support of the 1964 coup , and the assemblage of narratives
that will value throughout the transition process at national
reconciliation as the only way to restore a system democratic
political. / Este trabalho resulta de uma investigação historiográfica que analisou as narrativas elaboradas pelas revistas Veja e Isto É, referentes à construção de sentidos atribuídos às palavras democracia e cidadania, ao longo do período de abertura política e funcionamento da Assembleia Nacional Constituinte. A pesquisa envolveu as edições das respectivas revistas entre os anos de 1974 a 1988, recorte iniciado quando da posse do presidente Ernesto Geisel, que propôs o início da distensão política, desde que guiada pelo governo autoritário, e finalizado com a promulgação da nova Carta Magna, apelidada de Constituição Cidadã. A imprensa foi entendida como espaço de veiculação de debates quanto ao modelo democrático que se esperava construir com a abertura política, agindo como lugar de ordenação do tempo e do ritmo do processo político e interferindo na construção de uma memória compartilhada por diversos agentes e grupos sociais sobre a redemocratização. Buscou-se focalizar a retomada de manifestações de diferentes setores da sociedade civil, que articulavam novos espaços de atuação social e política ao mesmo tempo em que a imprensa fortalecia em suas narrativas a importância de seu papel mediador e fiscalizador. Analisou-se ainda, a operacionalização de um afastamento da imprensa e sociedade civil quanto à participação e apoio ao golpe de 1964, bem como o agenciamento de narrativas que valorizarão durante todo o processo de transição a conciliação nacional como única via ao restabelecimento de um regime político democrático.
