Socialt stöd till ungdomar med kroniska sjukdomar

Social support is important for adults well-being, quality of life and self-esteem. The nurse should respond to the patient's care needs, knowledge of social support for young people with chronic diseases is therefore important. The purpose was to investigate who or which ones provide social support for young people with chronic diseases and what social support contributes to. A descriptiv design where used. The literature search in the database Medline via Cinahl resulted in twelwe articles. The results showed that young people with chronic diseases received support from family, friends, healthcare professionals, through technology, school and pets. Social support led to protection, quality of life, Sense of Coherence (SOC) and independence. Protection meant someone was there for them and quality of life to be like everyone else. SOC meant to get help to deal with life of their own resources and independence to fend for themselves. Social support for young people with chronic diseases is important. The nurse should know that young people need support from different groups and what it leads to. Further research about nurse's perceptions of their role with regard to support for young people would be of interest. Key words: Social support, young people, care, chronic diseases.
