Abstract Reading strategies that teachers use in teaching are of great importance for learning. The purpose of this study is to find out how and in what way reading strategies are used for students of other languages. This study is a qualitative research based on Vygotsky's (2001) theory of sociocultural perspective. Learning takes place as a social process and students are constantly undergoing change and development. This development takes place in the social interaction between both teachers and classmates. The survey material has been collected through semi-structured interviews and a geometry test. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with five teachers based on the purpose of the study and the question. Geometry test was conducted in two classes at different schools, and it consisted of three parts. The first part was simple and clear text questions to examine the students' mathematical knowledge. The second part was with questions related to everyday life and the third part consisted of questions taken from old national tests. The results of the study were consistent with the teachers' assessment. It showed that second language students have a lack of understanding of words and are in crucial need of reading strategies to solve in mathematical text problems. The special needs education teacher's task is to support the students in their learning process and to follow their knowledge development at the individual level. Individual intensive training with extra explanation of words and following a strategy where the text can be divided into smaller parts is a successful effort to increase students' understanding of problem-solving tasks. The special needs education teacher needs to create a good collaboration with the teachers to develop the school's learning environment by supervising and supporting the teachers in the didactic and methodological development.
