A nematic liquid crystal cell is used in conjunction with a mirror retro-reflector to modulate a low-power laser beam. The object is to determine the feasibility of the combination in transmitting information from a remote sensor without a large energy source at that sensor. Analog modulation does not appear workable, but a digitally-encoded scheme is feasible.
