Temporalidad y ética en Mañana en la batalla piensa en mí, de Javier Marías.

Javier Marias' work, which belongs to the so-called "Nueva Narrativa espanola", has rapidly gained the attention of the critics and scholars alike. Nevertheless, the studies relating specifically to Manana en la batalla piensa en mi remain so far fragmentary and often limited to the thematic aspects of the novel. The objective of this thesis is to conduct an in-depth analysis of one of the themes underscored by the critics---time---in its three semiotic aspects (syntactic, semantic and pragmatic), in an attempt to bring into light the relationship between the temporal and ethical dimensions of the novel. Thus, after chapter one, which establishes the theoretical framework of the study, chapter II is devoted to the presentation of the history and its narrator. This preparatory work allows then a detailed analysis of the syntactic aspect of time, consistent with the structural approach of Gerard Genette (chap. III) and Paul Ricoeur's definition of the "fictive experience of time", which is then confronted to the ethical stand of our contemporary world (semantic and pragmatic aspects, chap. IV). The study reveals how the constant ambivalence inherent in time reflects itself in the deep structure of the novel and in its principal character. The main conclusion of the study corroborates the theoretical assumption of Paul Ricoeur concerning the function of the structural configuration of time in the novel, which is to articulate a temporal experience in the fictive world projected by the text which in this case entails ethical relativity. Also, its confrontation with our real world suggests the postmodern nature of the novel.
