Using the work of sociologist Nathalie Heinich on the intrinsic relationship between singularity and collectivity in modern artistic practices as a starting point, we would like to illustrate how the movement within those two poles affected the exotic group, present on the Quebec literary scene in the 1910s. The four poets who comprised that group adopted a similar posture in public, belonged to the same social circles and shared a similar background of literary references, influences and topoï. However, they differed from one another by their collections of poem, each unique in tone and construction. Neither a literary school nor a movement, the exotic group cannot be defined by traditional categories. The notion of « collective posture », developed by Anthony Glinoer, seems to be the most adequate denomination for the group's endeavours. To analyse the exotic identity, we will consider both their social behaviour and their writings. We will also examine with the aid of literary history books and works of fiction how the exotic have been depicted throughout the XXth century. / Partant de la réflexion développée par la sociologue Nathalie Heinich sur les rapports intrinsèques entre singularité et collectivité dans les pratiques artistiques en régime de modernité, nous nous proposons de montrer la dynamique qui s'est installée entre ces deux pôles chez le groupe des exotiques, actif au cours des années 1910. Les quatre poètes exotiques affichent une même posture sur la scène littéraire québécoise, fréquentent un même réseau et partagent un même imaginaire, c'est-à-dire un ensemble commun de références, d'influences et de topoï. Ils se démarquent toutefois par des œuvres se voulant éminemment singulières, très différentes les unes des autres tant par leur facture rhétorique que par leur ton ou leur construction. Ne formant ni une école, ni un mouvement, bien qu'un ensemble de traits sociologiques et esthétiques réunissent ses membres, le groupe des exotiques échappe aux catégories traditionnelles : la notion de « posture collective » développée par Anthony Glinoer paraît la plus apte à le qualifier. Pour définir cette identité exotique fuyante, nous nous intéresserons tant aux agirs des poètes (sociabilités, conduites publiques), qu'à leurs écrits. Nous analyserons aussi, au moyen d'histoires littéraires et de récits de fiction, les différentes représentations des exotiques à travers le XXe siècle.
