This thesis aims to explain the complex and sometimes paradoxical relations between the defense of modern aesthetic manifestations and a fierce opposition to many aspects of modernity among writers associated with La Relève and La Nouvelle Relève (Montreal, 1934-1948). While the aesthetic reflection of these authors is the principal object of this thesis, their philosophical, political and religious positions—inseparable from their aesthetics—are also widely discussed. The first chapter is devoted to the European thinkers, from whom La Relève draws its main inspiration—including Jacques Maritain, Emmanuel Mounier and Daniel-Rops. The rest of the thesis concentrates on the writings of Robert Élie, a regular contributor and member of the journal's founding team. The chapters dedicated to Robert Élie allow us to i) put forth the values underlying his aesthetics and specify the part they play in Élie's "political" thought; ii) follow the evolution of his relationship with formal modernity and study his ways of coping with the thorny and unavoidable problem of the morality of art; and iii) evaluate, through a reading of Élie's first novel, short stories and essays, how he sought to apply these aesthetic principles to his own creative writing. It appears that Élie's fervent Catholicism and the anti-modern aspects of his thought that ensue may have fostered his approval of modern poetic forms and of non-figurative painting, while causing some uneasiness with regards to the novel as a literary form. This was partly overcome in his novel, La fin des songes, published in 1950. / Cette thèse propose d'expliciter les relations complexes et parfois paradoxales qui s'établissent, chez les auteurs associés aux revues La Relève et La Nouvelle Relève (1934-1948), entre l'adhésion à la modernité esthétique et les manifestations d'une farouche antimodernité. La réflexion esthétique de ces auteurs demeure l'objet principal de la thèse, indissociable toutefois de leurs positions philosophiques, politiques et religieuses, dont il est aussi tenu compte. Après un chapitre consacré aux penseurs européens dont La Relève s'inspire et se réclame, parmi lesquels figurent Jacques Maritain, Emmanuel Mounier et Daniel-Rops, l'analyse s'appuie principalement sur les écrits publiés et inédits de Robert Élie, collaborateur régulier et animateur de la revue. Les chapitres consacrés à Robert Élie permettent i) d'exposer les valeurs sous-jacentes au développement de son esthétique et de préciser de quelle façon elle s'inscrit dans une pensée « politique » et répond à une volonté d'engagement ; ii) d'étudier l'évolution de son rapport à la modernité formelle et sa façon de composer avec l'épineux problème des rapports entre l'art et la morale, incontournable en régime esthétique catholique ; et enfin iii) d'évaluer l'application à sa propre œuvre littéraire de ces principes esthétiques et des difficultés qui s'ensuivent. Il apparaît au terme de ces analyses que le fervent catholicisme d'Élie et les aspects antimodernes de sa pensée qui en découlent pourraient avoir favorisé son adhésion à des formes poétiques modernes et à la non-figuration en peinture, tout en nourrissant un malaise vis-à-vis du roman, malaise qu'Élie aura en partie surmonté en écrivant La fin des songes, roman publié en 1950.
