Previous issue date: 2006-03-29 / Este estudo demonstra como o desenvolvimento de um projeto cultural do Programa Demonstrativo dos Povos Indígena (PDPI), financiado pelo Governo alemão com vistas a fortalecer as tradições dos índios Bakairi do Mato Grosso, e, indiretamente, proteger as florestas tropicais brasileiras, resultou na chegada da eletricidade e da televisão, na transformação de um rito tradicional em uma narrativa mítica encenada em forma de show, e no crescimento de poder e prestígio de uma liderança interétnica. __________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / This study shows how the development of a project sponsored by the German government, aimed at strengthening indigenous traditions, and, indirectely, protecting the Brazilian rain forests, had the following results: the arrival of electricity and television at the village; the change of a traditional rite into a theater-like performance; and the growth of power and prestige of an interethnic indigenous leader.
