With the rapid increase in human population during recent years, a growing interest has developed in the resources of the sea. Although much basic knowledge has accumulated concerning the life in temperate and boreal waters, particularly of the eastern Atlantic, less is known of the fauna and flora of the arctic and subarctic (Dunbar 1953).
