Occur that the reader, in a first instance, it is not called for the interlocutor, having in view the diary s format, that is dominant the fictional author Aires s speech, and request just a paper like confident. The investigation was problematic, then, the function of the reader in a diary s genre that structures and supports the narrative, deriving from there three types of readers proposed by Memorial: the paper-reader, the witness-reader and the author-reader. The paper-reader is seen in the diary s intimate literature, defining content and support of a unique way, its role is an active way to question the author himself Aires. The other two interlocutors, the witness-reader and the author-reader show themselves in a conflict in relation to the diary s structure: The first one takes place of an observer and interprets the facts like the author himself; the second one turns the diary public, making it goes to a different way of it principal characteristic: keep it s author in you private space. When the author-reader shows himself, identifying as M de A. , fictional double of Machado de Assis. It is this reader-publisher that assumes, in the Warning, the choices and edition s narrative for the Memorial inspired by the notes left by Chancellor Aires. The results of this research show this text, by the point of view of the readers of the narrative has gained a new dimension that enriches the Memorial de Aires retrospective criticism / O presente trabalho tem por objeto investigar o lugar do leitor no romance Memorial de Aires de Machado de Assis. Ocorre que o leitor, numa primeira instância, não é chamado para a interlocução, tendo em vista o formato de diário, que domina o discurso do autor ficcional Aires, e que pede apenas o papel como confidente. A investigação problematizou, então, a função do leitor no gênero diário, que estrutura e sustenta a narrativa, derivando daí três tipos de leitores propostos pelo Memorial: o leitor-papel, o leitor-testemunha e o leitor-autor. O leitor-papel é aquele previsto na literatura intimista do diário, afinando conteúdo e suporte de uma forma singular, já que aqui o papel assume função ativa e questionadora do próprio autor Aires. As duas outras instâncias de interlocução, no entanto, o leitor-testemunha e o leitor- autor, mostraram-se conflitantes com a estrutura do diário: o primeiro por se colocar na posição de quem observa e interpreta os fatos, assemelhando-se ao cronista; o segundo por tornar público o diário, desviando-o, assim, da sua principal característica: a de se manter, apenas, no espaço privado de seu autor. Quanto ao leitor-autor, desdobra-se, ainda, em editor do livro por meio da assinatura M. de A , duplo ficcional de Machado de Assis. É esse leitor-editor que assume, na Advertência, a seleção e edição da narrativa do Memorial a partir dos cadernos de notas deixados pelo Conselheiro Aires. Os resultados da pesquisa demonstraram que a obra, enfocada da perspectiva dos leitores engendrados pela narrativa, ganhou uma nova dimensão, que veio enriquecer a fortuna crítica de Memorial de Aires
