Detection efficiency of plastic scintillators for elastically scattered positive pions

The efficiency for detecting positive pions which have been scattered elastically from a target has been calculated for low pion energies. Measurements of the efficiency at pion kinetic energies 12 - 77 MeV were made for a 12" long x 5" diameter NE110 plastic scintillator
optically coupled to a Philips XP1040 photomultiplier tube. The efficiencies varied from 94% at 12 MeV to 79% at 77 MeV. / Science, Faculty of / Physics and Astronomy, Department of / Graduate
