The documentary “More to be told” made by Al Jazeera, has caught our attention to the less debated problem of fear and distrust of authorities among newly arrived people in Sweden. The documentary interviews newcomers parents whose kids were taken into custody by social services in Sweden. Those parents feel powerless toward the authorities' decision and an atmosphere of lack of communication is dominating. Even though the aim of this study was not to study this controversial topic (taking kids in custody), the documentary gives indications of high levels of distrust toward the social services. We aimed therefore at this study to explore if there is fear and distrust of authorities among newcomers in Sweden and how the Swedish authorities work with this group which supposedly don’t trust the system. With authorities in this context, we mean different kinds of social service within the regional and state-driven agencies. The study was based on interviewing six professionals who all work directly with newly arrived people. By using both interviews and previous research we have found that it is not a direct problem with distrust for this group of people. Rather the opposite, this group ranks higher when it comes to having trust in authorities. However this trust in authorities decreases, according to both previous research and our interviews, by spending more years in Sweden.
