Increase the Evaluation Capability of the Crack Depth of the Aircraft Engine Disk with Eddy Current Inspection

The purpose of this thesis is to increase the ability of the depth of the crack detecting for the engine disk using the eddy current inspection technology. There are two methods for the engine disk inspection. One is the conventional method which is fluorescent penetration inspection (FPI). The other is eddy current inspection. It has the disadvantage to distinguish precisely for the fluorescent penetration inspection and will affect to judge the result of inspection for the inspector. The eddy current inspection could detect the flaw more precise and faster than the conventional method, especially on the job of measuring the depth of crack. For this reason, the thesis focuses on developing the technology to inspect the engine disk using eddy current in the engine repair shop.
For this purpose, the procedures of the eddy current inspection are developed to improve the weakness of the convention inspection and increase the preciseness of detection for engine disk inspection. The various artificial of cracks are also machined in the engine disk for detection evaluation. The results are analyzed and accumulated to create a data bank and operating manual for inspector to follow it for engine disk inspection. The results of this study can be referred by the maintenance of airplane engine and insurance the flying security.
