______________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / Introduction. The World Health Organization (WHO) considers the osteoporosis as a XXI century epidemic. The control of its impact in a period in which humanity is gradually aging is a very relevant aim. It demands a greater scientific production to guide the public policies designed to populations and that adapt themselves to their characteristics. Objectives. Analyze the prevalence and describe the risk factors of osteoporosis and no vertebral fractures by minor trauma in elderly female population in the city of São Sebastião-DF. Methods. This is a cross sectional epidemiological used to study five hundred eighty two women, over 60 years old, living in São Sebastião, were studied with bone densitometry. The following variables were evaluated: age, menarche and menopause ages, duration of menacme, weight, height, body mass index (BMI), milk, vegetables and coffee daily ingestion, smoking, alcohol consumption, current physical activity, type and location of fracture and family history of osteoporosis. Results. Among the 582 women studied, in 48 (8.2%) the bone densitometry was normal, in 227 (39%) had osteopenia, and in 307 (52.8%) had osteoporosis. It was observed that women with normal densitometry had significantly lower age (p <0.05) than those who had osteoporosis, but not in relation to those who had osteopenia. However, they had weight, height and BMI higher than those who had osteoporosis (p <0.05) and osteopenia (p <0.05). Women with osteopenia had lower ages, but higher weight, height and BMI than those with osteoporosis (p <0.05). Women with osteoporosis had 48 fractures; with osteopenia had 30 fractures; and those with normal densitometry had 6 fractures (p <0.05). Conclusion. We observed low prevalence of normal bone densitometry (8.2%) and high prevalence of osteopenia (39%) and osteoporosis (52.8%). Age and BMI were variables considered to be risk factors for osteoporosis. There was a higher prevalence of fractures by minor trauma among women with osteoporosis.
