THE U8-21 MEV REGION OF CARBON-12 POPULATED BY BORON-11 (DEUTERON,NEUTRON) CARBON-12 AT E(DEUTERON) = 10 AND 12 MEV

The modified high resolution beam pulsing system at FSU has been used for neutron time of flight detection over relatively short flight paths (2 m). This enabled a study of ('12)C using the (d,n) proton stripping reaction. In addition to the well known lower lying states three strong peaks, at 18.38 ((GAMMA) = 0.350), 19.55 ((GAMMA) = 0.575), 20.62 ((GAMMA) = 0.525) MeV excitation, were seen in the measured energy angular distribution spectra. Each peak likely contains more than one state in ('12)C. Angular distributions were compared with distorted wave Born approximation calculations for particle unbound states. A coincidence experiment measured the branching ratios and angular correlations of the charged particle decays. The 19.55 MeV peak was clearly shown to be composed of at least two states with different proton and alpha decay strengths. The 18.38 and 20.62 MeV peaks were shown to contain states of natural parity. The angular correlations were compared to theoretical calculations for various angular momentum possibilities. The singles spectra of the present work most closely resemble those of intermediate energy proton inelastic scattering. / Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 45-09, Section: B, page: 2969. / Thesis (Ph.D.)--The Florida State University, 1984.
