Previous issue date: 2013-01-22 / This study addresses the issue of Labour, Social Service and Public Policy Social Assistance (PPAS). The overall goal was to understand the theoretical debate and operational moving on the work category and work processes that fall assistants in both ontological conception as in the intervention by the PPAS aiming to qualify debates and interventions developed in the area. It is a research-driven quantitative and qualitative method to answer critical-dialectical conception which is operationalized and how the work of social workers in PPAS in Caxias do Sul bibliographic search was performed, documentary and empirical. In the treatment of the data was carried out based on content analysis Trivi?os (1989). The main results the study found that there are many challenges present in the daily operation of social assistance policy, because there is the need to overcome the bias present in both the conservative and in Social Work intervention in politics. Additionally, it points to the discrepancy present theoretical formulations on the issue than meets the interventions undertaken by social workers placed in foster care. Also noteworthy is that the researchpointed out the relevance of the debate on the political dialogue of the ethical project of Social Work with social assistance policy as a strategy for skilled labor operationalized. Based on these results, we conclude that there is still much to build inorder to delineate work together on social assistance so effective it from the perspective of strengthening a democratic and universalist / O presente estudo aborda a tem?tica do Trabalho, Servi?o Social e Pol?tica P?blica de Assist?ncia Social (PPAS). O objetivo geral foi compreender o debate te?rico e operacional em movimento sobre a categoria trabalho e processos de trabalho em que se inserem os assistentes tanto na concep??o ontol?gica quanto no ?mbito da interven??o junto ? PPAS com vistas a qualificar as interven??es e debates desenvolvidos na ?rea. Trata-se de uma pesquisa quanti-qualitativa orientada pelo m?todo dial?tico-cr?tico para responder qual a concep??o e como ? operacionalizado o trabalho dos assistentes sociais na PPAS no munic?pio de Caxias do Sul. Foi realizada pesquisa bibliogr?fica, documental e emp?rica. No tratamento dos dados foi efetivada an?lise de conte?do baseada em Trivi?os (1989). Como principais resultados o estudo identificou que h? muitos desafios presentes no cotidiano da operacionaliza??o da pol?tica de assist?ncia social, pois se verifica a necessidade de ser superado o vi?s conservador presente tanto no Servi?o Social quanto na interven??o junto ? pol?tica. Al?m disso, aponta-se para a discrep?ncia presente nas formula??es te?ricas sobre a tem?tica que n?o condizem com as interven??es desenvolvidas pelos assistentes sociais inseridos na assist?ncia social. Destaca-se tamb?m que a pesquisa apontou a relev?ncia do debate sobre a interlocu??o do projeto ?tico pol?tico do Servi?o Social com a pol?tica de assist?ncia social enquanto estrat?gia para qualifica??o do trabalho operacionalizado. Com base nesses resultados, conclui-se que h? ainda muito por construir no sentido de delinear o trabalho junto ? assist?ncia social de forma a efetiva-la na perspectiva do fortalecimento da cultura democr?tica e universalista
