Previous issue date: 2011-03-02 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This study compared the amplitude and duration of activity of the masseter (MA) and anterior temporalis (TA) muscles between children with typical development (TD) and children with cerebral palsy (CP) during the inactive (PI) and active (PA) masticatory cycle. Variables related to the amplitude and duration of the masticatory cycle were obtained by means of kinematic and electromyography analysis of the MA and TA muscles, bilateral. The group of children with CP was characterized by clinical (Modified Ashworth Scale and GMFCS). The variables were analyzed by means of descriptive statistics, Student s "t" test, Mann-Whitney test, Chi-square test, Spearman Correlation Coefficient, and Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC). It was observed that in children with PC the amplitude of activation of all analyzed muscles was significantly higher during the PI. In the other hand, during the PA, only the right masseter and the left temporalis presented values significantly higher of amplitude of activation. With respect to the temporal variables, children with CP had significantly longer duration of the active period (TA) of the right masseter and temporalis and the total active period (TPA). There was no significant difference for the inactivation (VTI) and activation (VTA) latency times, as well as the sequence of muscle activation (SA). One can concluded therefore that children with CP have more difficult to perform an efficient masticatory function when compared with children with TD. / O presente estudo comparou a amplitude e a duração da atividade dos músculos masseter (MA) e temporal anterior (TA) entre crianças com desenvolvimento típico (DT) e crianças com paralisia cerebral (PC) durante os períodos inativo (PI) e ativo (PA) do ciclo mastigatório. As variáveis relacionadas à amplitude e à duração do ciclo mastigatório foram obtidas por meio das análises cinemática e eletromiográfica dos músculos MA e TA, bilaterais. O grupo de crianças com PC foi caracterizado através de avaliações clínicas (Escala Modificada de Ashworth e GMFCS). As variáveis foram analisadas por meio da estatística descritiva, dos testes t de Student, de Mann-Whitney e Qui-quadrado, do coeficiente de correlação de Spearmann e do Coeficiente de Correlação Intraclasse (CCI). Observou-se que em crianças com PC a amplitude de ativação de todos os músculos analisados foi significativamente maior durante o PI. Já durante o PA, apenas os músculos masseter direito e temporal esquerdo apresentaram valores significativamente maiores de amplitude de ativação. Em relação às variáveis temporais, crianças com PC apresentaram duração significativamente mais longa do tempo ativo (TA) dos músculos masseter e temporal direitos e do tempo do período ativo (TPA). Não houve diferença significativa para os tempos de latência de inativação (LI) e ativação (LA), bem como para a sequência de ativação muscular (SA). Pode-se concluir, portanto, que as crianças com PC encontram maiores dificuldades para a realização de uma função mastigatória eficiente quando comparadas às crianças com DT.
