(...)This paper has analyzed various statistics about shifts in population between Vienna, Lower-Austria and the Burgenland and the development of housing settlements in Lower-Austria and the Burgenland. It has also attempted to reveal a relationship between commuter traffic to Vienna and the shifts in population and new housing settlements in Lower-Austria and the Burgenland. It has further discussed the role of public housing subsidies and tax incentives for commuters. It has also sought to present alternatives of how to reform the subsidy program and tax incentive program towards more efficient urban planning and commuting schemes in order to lessen the impact of urban sprawl and commuter traffic.(author's abstract) / Series: Schriftenreihe des Instituts für Transportwirtschaft und Logistik - Verkehr
