Abstract: This thesis describes some sessions of psychoanalytic group psychotherapy where relevant situations trigger off an involvement of some members of the group or all of them. In the introduction, it is outlined my own professional routes - from psychiatry to group psychoanalysis. It also describes some historical aspects of the psychoanalytic group psychotherapy and the main theoretical concepts related do the subject of this thesis. The purpose of this work is to investigate the unconscious reactions that a human grouping may have in different situations. It is, in fact, about small groups going through psychotherapy process in the following situations: change of therapy room, change of the time of the session, holidays of the analyst, first session after holiday, change from a private treatment to one provided by an institution, increase of treatment rate, the group analyst having his hair cut, a session where the group analyst comes late, the last session of the co-therapist. The methodology applied in this investigation is based on the psychoanalytic group psychotherapy techniques. The abstinence of the psychotherapist allows free association of ideas and thoughts from the group, 50 that psychological treatment can be accomplished. Campbell (1990) suggests that the psychotherapist has an instrument which makes him capable of achieving the "how we would like to demonstrate" from mathematics. Following this view, using as instrument the "psychoanalytic group psychotherapy" we attempt to demonstrate how the psychotherapeutic group reacts to what I call the "group occurrence". This part of the thesis is illustrated by clinical material of fifteen sessions of psychoanalytical group psychotherapy. We conclude that, when subjected to the situations mentioned above, the psychotherapeutic groups go through a process of regression and seem to repeat the routes of the hero. Taking into account of psychomythology, we think that on way of understanding the unconscious reaction of the group occurrence is making a parallel with the route of the hero. The group unconsciously repeats the mythical route of the hero: the saga of the hero. He sees ghosts and danger everywhere, feels carelessness and helplessness. 80 that he tries to build with members of the group and with the group analyst a pathway of anxiety and suffering. Next we investigate the application of these concepts to other group situations. Grinberg (1976) considers the small group as a microssociology. One can think that similar situations can be experienced between the teacher and his small group of pupils; between the leader and his followers; or in a family, between the father and the other members of the family group. If we go further in this perspective, we can also consider the small group as a part of the society at large and question whether the population of a country can also react in similar ways as the ones described in this thesis. In the last part, we introduce the bibliography / Mestrado / Mestre em Saude Mental
