Previous issue date: 2015-04-13 / The purpose of this research was to understand the construction process of the social and environmental commitment by urban youth in a Brazilian Northeast capital. Such group is dedicated to the study and intervention in the field of environmental issues. From a qualitative approach, it was investigated the life story of 18 young people, ages from 15 to 24 years, engaged in two existing groups in educational institutions, with the specific purpose of understanding the experiences that favored the conduct of caring for the environment revealed by themselves. As data collection methods in this study it was used Focus Groups, Individual Interviews, Participant Observation and Sociodemographic Questionnaire. The data was organized and analyzed in reference to Bardin's Content Analysis method. Environmental Psychology, especially studies on sustainable behaviors, pro-environmental behaviors and related concepts, as well as the postulates of Bioecology of Human Development, among other theoretical references, allowed to organize theme categories and to analyze the collected material, which was segmented into three data blocks. The first block holds the theme of sustainable behaviors and sustainability; the second concerns the various sources of influence, resulting from the interactions and activities of "microsystems" of which the subjects participated; and the third refers to the media contributions. The results showed the importance of family, school, religious institutions and other social environments in youth formation, highlighting the interplay of these influences as a whole. Experiences of direct contact with natural resources, linked to meaningful affective interactions, also showed to be of great relevance, in reference to allowing closeness to other environment elements and providing a sense of well-being. In addition, respondents attributed to social media the role of providing information and facilitating interactions between people with common goals. It was also noted that contradictions inherent to social environment practices were noted by the
young people interviewed by this study, which when attributing responsibilities to oneself and to the broader social structure, questioned about the possible ways to deal with the current challenges. The young revealed hope and desperation towards the society in which they live and, above all, they showed the desire to participate and to transform reality. In conclusion, it is possible to say that the life environment of the participants was important to their value formation, to their conscience and the effectiveness of caring for the environment posture, being also need yet experiences that help to consolidate the social environment commitment of the young people interviewed by this study.
